Cyclists in Road Traffic Accidents

Cycling is a popular hobby and an environmentally friendly way to travel, but cyclists often find themselves at risk from other road users. Unfortunately, accidents involving cyclists are relatively common, and this is often because drivers are unaware of them on the roads, or are not observing correct protocols for driving near cyclists.

As a driver, it’s vital to educate yourself on how to safely share the road with cyclists. If you’re in any doubt about whether there is enough space to pass a cyclist, for example, wait and follow at a safe distance until you are certain that you will not be putting the cyclist or yourself at risk. There are also many things that cyclists can do to increase their safety.  Some of these are outlined below:

Make Cycling Safer

1.    Wear reflective clothing. Even the most careful drivers can’t keep you safe if they can’t see you. Wearing reflective clothing, and adding reflective strips to your knees and ankles to reflect more light when you are pedalling, can be life saving measures. Failure to wear reflective clothing may mean that you are considered to be at fault if you are involved in an accident, which can be very expensive.

2.    Use lights. You should have lights on your bike if you ever ride in twilight or in the dark, and they can also help you to be more visible on overcast days. Reflectors are also important to help you to stand out.  Lights are vital when cycling.  Riding in the dark without lights is putting your life at risk.

3.    Follow the rules. As a cyclist, you must adhere to the laws of the road and should always show consideration for other road users. Following good standards of road safety will help to keep you and others safe, and you should ensure that anyone you are riding with, particularly children, is aware of the rules of the road that apply to them.

4.    Use cycle paths where possible. If there is a designated cycle path for the route you are travelling, it’s important to use it. This reduces the risk of injury to you caused by dangerous or careless driving.
